The Patriots and Giants went through their final practices on Friday as they get set for Super Bowl XLVI Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium here in Indianapolis.
Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski continues to be the biggest story on either side as he continues to recover from a sprained left ankle. He was limited in practice on Thursday and moved without a limp during Friday's walkthrough. According to the pool reporter, the Patriots didn't do more than jog through their offensive plays.

“(Gronkowski) practiced yesterday," said head coach Bill Belichick. "He didn't do anything today. We'll see where he's at on Sunday, but hopefully (he'll play). I saw no setbacks. He's still making progress."
I'd be stunned if Gronkowski didn't play. Many of his teammates were convinced during the week that the outstanding tight end would play. The only question will be how effective he is. He is officially listed as questionable.
CATCHING UP WITH A FORMER GIANTS CHAMPION
Giants alumni have been arriving in Indianapolis all week. On Friday, I caught up with former guard Bill Ard from the Super Bowl XXI championship team.
Listen to the interview here...
Bill is also in town as part of the Taste of the NFL event on Saturday night, a party that raises money to help fight hunger.
A SUPER FOOTBALL BENEFITS A SUPER CAUSE
For Giants fans that are looking for a great keepsake from Super Bowl XLVI, here is something pretty cool and you can help out a charity in the process. Nikco Sports has produced 5,000 limited edition Giants NFC Championship footballs and a portion of the $99 cost will go to the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club in New York.
The ball has the Super Bowl XLVI logo on it as well as a photo of Eli Manning and the Giants 2011 schedule and results. In years past, Nikco Sports has raised almost $1.7 million for children's charities around the country from the sales of limited-edition sports memorabilia. To order the ball, call `1-800-345-2868 or go to www.nikcosports.com.
THE PREDICTION
When I arrived here in Indianapolis on Sunday, I was firm in my prediction of Giants 35 Patriots 20. After being around the Pats this week and sinking my teeth into this match-up a little bit more. I've decided to change the score.
Giants 35 Patriots 27
I just find it hard to see the Giants winning this game by two scores. The Patriots defense is shaky so I don't see how they can shut down Eli Manning and his trio of outstanding wide receivers. The Patriots will do some damage against the Giants defense, but the Big Blue defense will force a couple of turnovers and that will be the difference in the game.
INDY SCORED A TOUCHDOWN
I've mentioned this throughout the week, but it's worth repeating of how well the city of Indianapolis did in hosting their first Super Bowl. Congratulations to the host committee, local officials, and the residents of this community for making this a very special week.
(Peter Schwartz / WFAN)
I can't speak for everyone who traveled here to Indianapolis this week, but I'll say that, for me, it was an awesome experience. You can tell how much passion there was from the local community even though the Colts weren't involved. The streets were packed everyday the hospitality was off the charts.
(Peter Schwartz / WFAN)
A lot of people were quick to lament the fact that Indianapolis was hosting the Super Bowl, but I haven’t heard one person complain about it this week. In fact, everyone that I talked to had nothing but great things to say.
Memo to the New York/New Jersey Host Committee for 2014: You have two years to prepare for the first ever outdoor cold-weather Super Bowl. Here’s hoping that you took plenty of notes this week!
I hope you enjoyed my coverage of Super Bowl XLVI all week. The Giants and Patriots provide an intriguing match-up for Sunday's contest. Enjoy the game!
Super Bowl Fans Take To Social Media To Navigate Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Attention, SB46 fans: Looking for a celebrity? Need a parking spot or a bathroom? How about a place to eat without waiting for hours? The answers could be just a tweet away.
A year after Super Bowl 45 set a record 4,064 tweets per second during the fourth quarter of the game, organizers are aiming to make this year’s game in Indianapolis the most connected Super Bowl ever.
Dozens of volunteers are stationed along downtown streets, armed with tablets and walkie-talkies that connect them to the game’s first-ever social media command center. There, volunteers mine Twitter, Facebook and other social networks for real-time news that can help fans avoid hassles that could ruin their Super Bowl experience.
More than 37,000 fans are following the host committee on Facebook and through the game’s official Twitter account, SuperBowl2012, where pleas for trash removal mingle with requests for tickets to a Lucas Oil Stadium tour. Thousands more have texted SB2012 for weather, traffic and other information.
And yes, in case you’re wondering, there’s an app for that: The NFL also has created an official “SB XLVI Guide” app for iPhone, iPad and Android phones with a 3D map of Indianapolis that includes road closures and a parking restaurants and events guide. Ticket holders can also type in their seat section and see where they’ll be sitting on game day.
Curious? Here’s a user guide to digitally exploring the Super Bowl:
WHERE’S JIMMY?
Celebrity-spotting has become a social media sport, and it’s in high gear this week in Indy. Want to know where to spot Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow or halftime performer Madonna? Search the game’s official hashtag, SB46.
Host Jimmy Fallon, taping his “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” at the Hilbert Circle Theatre this week, has used his Twitter account, jimmyfallon, to post photos of him enjoying the city, from a ride on the 800-foot-long zip line that soars above Super Bowl Village to a walk around Monument Circle, the war memorial-and-fountain adorned center of downtown, in drag. He’s given a boost to local restaurants, tweeting about the food and staff. And fans hoping to catch the show live have been checking Twitter to see how long the line is and whether standby tickets are available.
But star watchers, beware. Twitter never promised accuracy.
At one point this week, actor Ryan Gosling was seen at a downtown restaurant, somewhere in nearby suburb Zionsville or an hour away in Columbus, Ind., with Brad Pitt, all around the same time.
GET ME OUT OF THIS CAR:
Last week, a spike in complaints about not being able to find parking led to the creation of an interactive downtown parking map, which pinpoints every garage in the area for desperate drivers. But those stuck in traffic might be served just as well to pick up their smartphones.
While driving from Bloomington with her friends Wednesday to see a taping of Fallon’s show in Indianapolis, Laura Hunsucker checked the SuperBowl2012 Twitter account for advice on the best routes.
The directions she found there took her group straight to a parking garage with plenty of spaces just a few blocks from Super Bowl Village.
“I never would have thought to take that route if I hadn’t seen it on Twitter,” Hunsucker said.
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY:
Local restaurants are participating in the host committee’s “Text Times” program. When restaurants have wait times of less than 45 minutes, they text the command center, where volunteers relay the actual wait time to street teams armed with tablets and wearing large orange Super Bowl flags to make them easy to find in crowds.
Volunteer Scott Blake sports a walkie-talkie with an earpiece that gives him a direct connection to the command center. When a visitor has a question he can’t readily answer, like where the nearest karaoke bar is, Blake can call and get an answer in minutes.
It’s also his connection to the “Text Times” program. Earlier this week, a couple stopped to ask where they could eat nearby. A quick check with the command center and they were on their way to the nearby Colts Grille, where there was no wait.
“My job is to help people with whatever they need and welcome them to downtown,” Blake said.
TALK TO THE PLAYERS:
Even the teams are getting in on the act. On Thursday, four Giants players took part in the team’s Social Media Night. Fans had a 15-minute window with each player, posting questions to Twitter with appropriate hashtags. Safety Tyler Sash fielded questions to askSash about what it was like to make the Super Bowl in his first NFL season, while tight end Jake Ballard (askBallard) was questioned about his pre-game rituals.
The Giants also chose 20 fans for a live video chat with players through Google+.
While the Patriots haven’t planned any social-media gatherings, they’re not being neglected online. Chevrolet has been tracking Twitter mentions for the two teams on its “Road to the SuperBowl” site, and the Patriots have dominated. Receiver Chad Ochocinco has been mentioned more than 100,000 times, nearly four times the mentions received by the Giants’ Victor Cruz.

Islanders Get Goal From Unlikely Source, Stun Senators In OT
Written by jcap17
Saturday, 04 February 2012
OTTAWA (AP) — Mark Eaton’s latest goal was as important to the New York Islanders as it was rare for him to score.
Eaton scored 2:35 into overtime in his 600th NHL game to give the Islanders a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.
The 34-year-old defenseman took a pass from Milan Jurcina and put the puck into an open right side for his 24th NHL goal — his first since Nov. 28, 2009.
“The circumstance is the big thing. We’re just trying to get points and keep climbing up the standings,” Eaton said. “Every point’s big and for it to be an OT winner makes it a little more memorable.”
Matt Martin scored the tying goal in the third and Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves for New York, which is on a 5-1-1 run.
The Islanders tied Tampa Bay for 11th in the Eastern Conference with 49 points, nine points behind eighth-place Toronto, which plays in Ottawa on Saturday night.
“We play Buffalo at home (Saturday) and we’re a confident bunch right now,” said P.A. Parenteau, who assisted on both goals. “We play with a lot of passion and we know what’s at stake in the next two weeks. Nothing’s impossible for us.”
John Tavares, chosen the NHL’s first star of the month on Wednesday, failed to record a point for the second time in four games following a 12-game points streak. The Islanders’ first overall pick in the 2009 draft had nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points in 13 games in January, including four in a 5-2 win at Carolina on Tuesday.
“Obviously it was a pretty tight hockey game and a big game for both teams,” Tavares said. “We came back, down by a goal, and it was nice to see a guy like Mark Eaton — who has done a lot of great things for us this year, the little things that don’t get a lot of the press — score, and it’s a nice win for us.”
Zack Smith scored a short-handed goal late in the second for the Senators, who have lost five in a row, the last four in regulation.
Ottawa’s Craig Anderson stopped 30 shots in his 16th straight start.
“Their play without the puck in the neutral zone was better than ours,” Senators coach Paul MacLean said.
Smith scored with 12.6 seconds left in the second. The Ottawa center carried the puck out of his zone and raced down the ice before taking a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Nabokov got his glove on the shot but the puck carried on and flew behind him into the net.
Martin tied it 5:27 into the third. Parenteau drew Senators defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Jared Cowen to the left side before feeding a pass to the right side of the slot, where Martin was left unguarded to fire a wrist shot past Anderson for his sixth goal.
Parenteau’s assist on Eaton’s goal extended his career high to 36. He had 34 assists last season, and 33 in 2009-10.
Jurcina went to the dressing room 8:16 into the third after he was attended to on the ice by a trainer. Jurcina, who landed on his backside following a hit by former teammate Zenon Konopka behind the New York net, quickly returned.
The game was delayed with 9.7 seconds remaining in regulation because of a broken curved glass panel at the far end of the Senators’ bench.
NOTES: Former Islanders stars Denis Potvin and Billy Smith were introduced to the crowd and shown on the video scoreboard during the game. Potvin is an analyst on Senators TV broadcasts and Smith watched from the stands. … The Senators’ five-game homestand is their longest of the season. … C Jim O’Brien made his season debut for Ottawa after he was recalled from AHL Binghamton earlier in the day. RW Bobby Butler was left out of the lineup.

Nets Waste Morrow?s Career-High 42, Lose Late To Timberwolves
Written by jcap17
Saturday, 04 February 2012
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves almost never won away from home last season.
Now, they don’t seem eager to go back there.
Luke Ridnour made the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:23 left, Nikola Pekovic scored a career-high 27 points, and the Timberwolves beat the New Jersey Nets 108-105 on Friday night to surpass last season’s road victory total.
The Timberwolves overcame a career-high 42 points from Anthony Morrow, whose eight 3-pointers in 11 attempts were the most in the NBA this season.
Kevin Love added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota, which improved to 6-4 on the road and 11-12 overall. The Wolves, just 5-36 on the road last season, have won three in a row away from home.
So, how about more road games?
“I wish,” Love said. “If it was that way we’d be over the doomed .500 mark that we can’t seem to get over. I really don’t even want to talk about it because it’s kind of been our Achilles’ heel.”
Rookie Ricky Rubio finished with 10 points, 10 assists and six steals for the Wolves in his point guard matchup with Deron Williams. Williams had 12 points and 14 assists, but shot just 5 of 18 and had two costly turnovers in the final half-minute.
Rubio came up with a steal with 1:35 left, leading to Ridnour’s 3-pointer that made it 102-99. The Wolves got the ball back after replays showed a ball went off Williams out of bounds with 29 seconds remaining, and Ridnour made two free throws for a five-point lead.
But Morrow, who missed the last game with a sprained left ankle, converted a four-point play to make it 104-103 with 22 seconds left. Jose Barea and Ridnour each made a pair from the line around Kris Humphries’ dunk to keep the lead at three, and the Nets lost their final chance when Williams fumbled the ball trying to throw a pass, with Rubio eventually coming up with it and lofting it downcourt as time ran out.
“Anthony was open, too,” Williams said. “It was an unfortunate turnover. Last two of the game are on me. I told the team it was my fault.”
Minnesota is just 5-8 at home, where it plays Saturday against Houston. But the Wolves seem comfortable on the road. Rubio is quickly making fans around the league, particularly in large markets, and one fan held a Puerto Rico flag behind the basket when Barea made his first appearance Friday.
Coach Rick Adelman agreed that maybe the Wolves should play more on the road.
“It seems like that’s where we win,” he said. “But I think it just gives you a lot of experience and different guys really stepped up. Pek was terrific. Just really terrific. I thought Ricky was really good tonight.”
Humphries had 16 points and nine rebounds.
Pekovic, in his second year from Montenegro, made 11 of 14 shots. He replaced an ineffective Darko Milicic to start the second half and dominated inside while also grabbing 11 rebounds. His layup erased the Nets’ last lead and tied it a 99 with 1:55 left.
“Pekovic played unbelievable,” Rubio said. “He’s a tough guy. He’s really tough I can tell you. He saved me a couple of times. I was all over with the ball and he was right there to finish the basket. He’s a smart guy.
“He knows how to play. He did an unbelievable job. Maybe he was the key of the game today.”
The Wolves led 23-19 after one, then used a 13-1 run early in the second to open a 36-22 lead on Michael Beasley’s follow with 8:15 remaining in the half. Morrow then hit a 3-pointer and suddenly the Nets were rolling, tearing off a 23-5 spurt that gave them a 45-41 edge.
Morrow hit his fourth 3 of the period with 1:33 to go, and the Nets led 50-49 at the break.
“It’s just me being in aggressive,” Morrow said. “It’s something that I’m continuing to build on.”
The Wolves trailed by one early in the third before Wes Johnson slammed down Rubio’s lob pass, then hit a 3-pointer for a 63-59 lead. Love hit two free throws, Rubio made a nifty move that had the crowd gasping to set up Johnson for a three-point play, and Pekovic hit two free throws to cap a 12-0 burst and make it 70-59 with 5:17 left in the period.
The Nets cut it to 80-75 after three.
Notes: Morrow’s previous career best of 37 came on Nov. 15, 2008, for Golden State, when he set an NBA record for most points scored by an undrafted rookie. … Nets C Brook Lopez, out all season with a broken right foot, said he has been jumping rope and running, and that he will soon work on his lateral movement. … The Nets won’t play in Brooklyn until next season, but they’ll be in New York on Monday. The Nets will wear their jerseys from the New York Nets of the ABA for the first of five games as part of the NBA’s Hardwood Classic nights. They played on Long Island from 1968-77, winning two titles. … Morrow was wincing as he came down the floor after rebounding the miss of Minnesota’s first shot, but didn’t appear bothered again by the ankle injury. … Milicic had missed three games with an illness before returning Wednesday against Indiana.

Knicks Fall Short In Boston, Season Spinning Out Of Control
Written by jcap17
Saturday, 04 February 2012
BOSTON (AP) — Paul Pierce scored 30 points and Ray Allen had nine of his 14 in the final quarter to lift the Boston Celtics to a 91-89 win over the struggling New York Knicks on Friday night.
Kevin Garnett finished with 15 points and eight boards for the Celtics, who won for the seventh time in eight games.
Carmelo Anthony scored 26, Tyson Chandler had 20 with 11 rebounds and Amare Stoudemire had 16 with 11 rebounds for the Knicks. New York lost for the 11th time in 13 games.
Garnett grabbed his 10,000th career defensive rebound early in the second quarter, becoming the third player in NBA history to reach that mark. He’s behind former Celtic Robert Parish (10,117) and Karl Malone (11,406).
Boston point guard Rajon Rondo returned after missing the previous eight games with a right wrist injury, but was ineffective, scoring just seven points and getting seven assists.
After Iman Shumpert’s jumper from the right corner closed the score to 85-83, Allen nailed a 3 from the right wing. Following a put-back by Chandler, Allen caught the ball in the right corner, drove the baseline and hit a left-hander that rolled in, giving the Celtics a 90-85 lead with just under 2 minutes left.
But the Knicks battled back, closing the gap to one after an alley-oop layup by Chandler and a steal and breakaway layup by Landry Field’s with 1:26 left.
Following a miss by Pierce, Anthony missed a drive, but the ball went out of bounds off Brandon Bass’ hands, giving New York another chance.
But the Knicks turned it over. Pierce had what appeared to be an off-balance 3-pointer with 14.4 seconds left as the shot clock expired. But the officials overruled it following a reply review.
Fields missed a 3 from the left corner with 6 seconds left and Pierce grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He hit the first, but missed the second.
Steve Novak airballed a desperation 3 and Garnett batted the ball down the floor as time expired.
Boston, which trailed since late in the opening quarter, tied it at 77 on Chris Wilcox’s two free throws with 7:13 to play. The teams traded baskets and remained tied until Allen nailed a 3 from the right side with 4:24 to play. It was his first basket of the second half.
New York had a six-point halftime lead and increased it to 67-55 on Anthony’s off-balance jumper midway into the third quarter. Both teams then played sloppily, turning the ball over numerous times and missing jumpers as the Knicks maintained at least a nine-point edge until late in the quarter.
Boston scored the final seven points of the third, cutting it to 72-69 after three when Wilcox had a put-back of Pierce’s miss at the buzzer.
The Knicks led 28-27 after one quarter and scored 13 of the initial 18 in the second to pull ahead 41-32 on Fields’ 3 from the wing. They opened a double digit lead (48-37) on Jared Jeffries’ 3-point play with 2:36 left in the quarter en route to a 55-49 halftime edge.
Pierce’s long-range shooting kept Boston close in the opening half. He had 15 points, going 3 for 6 on 3s. Garnett had 13, going 6 of 7 from the floor, hitting a rare 3 from the left wing. It was only his second attempt this season and he’s made both.
With the crowd a little extra excited with the Patriots playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, it appeared to help get the teams energized early, with both teams appearing to play tough defense from the start.
Notes: Stoudemire had a season-high 34 points in a loss at home against Chicago on Thursday. … Rondo was hit in the face with an elbow early in the game and had a welt under his right eye. … With his team struggling to get wins, New York coach Mike D’Antoni wasn’t worried before the game about minutes with his team playing the second of three in three nights. “We’ll see how everybody responds, but we need to win this game,” he said. The Knicks host New Jersey on Saturday. … Boston reserve G/F Marquis Daniels missed the game with a foot injury. … Boston coach Doc Rivers joked about the Boston-New York rivalry. “A lot of love,” he said, smiling, before talking about the Super Bowl matchup between the Patriots and Giants. “These two cities have a pretty good game coming up on Sunday, too.” … Rivers was given a technical in the second quarter and Stoudemire got one midway into the third after being called for an offensive foul.

Seen At 11: Crime Evidence Going On The Auction Block, Online
Written by wcbsmark
Saturday, 04 February 2012
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It just might be the only legal way to score a huge steal. Evidence from crimes are going on the auction block online. It’s like eBay, only hotter.
Former police detective Tom Lane came up with the idea for PropertyRoom.com and said you can find just about anything and everything for sale on the site, all starting at just $1.
“Every day we get bicycles, we get jewelry, we get electronics,” said Lane. “I have all these burglarized goods.”
The property was once considered evidence, ill-gotten goods from busted drug deals, home invasions, credit card fraud, auto theft, and even the toys and prized possessions of the criminals themselves.
“By law, the police department now has to auction if off,” Lane said.
All across the country, police departments are opening the doors to their evidence rooms, putting everything up for sale on PropertyRoom.com, where one man’s stolen watch is another man’s treasure.
Now you can bid on these items from the comfort of your own home, once the case is closed.
“Everything but the kitchen sink? It’s not true anymore. They steal the kitchen sinks,” Lane said.
Lane took CBS 2′s Maurice DuBois on a tour of the site’s East Coast warehouse in Farmingdale, N.Y., where the goods are stored until a bidder snatches them up.
DuBois saw thousands of items, from tools to musical instruments, sporting goods, china, computers, and phones. Some unexpected gems include a pair of blue topaz earrings appraised at $1,700 and a yellow diamond ring worth $17,000.
“There’s Eternity for Her from Calvin Klein, there’s Perry Ellis for men,” Lane said.
Many of the goods are brand new and brand name, like DKNY, Bulgari, Calvin Klein, Nike, and even Jimmy Choo.
“That right, there I paid $11 for and it goes for about $180,” said Louis Hengber, pointing at a leaf blower.
As for the item’s criminal connection, he said it doesn’t bother him.
“Yeah, you think about it, but does it bother me? Nah,” Hengber said.
Brandon Patterson said he doesn’t give much thought to an item’s shady past either, but admitted his wife might.
“I knew somebody had it, but it’s mine now,” he said. “I don’t know if the misses would like something from here for Valentine’s Day, but if I did see something nice, I will get it.”
The auctions last for about five days. Most of the proceeds go back to the local police departments.
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Newark school superintendent tried unsuccessfully Friday night to calm hundreds of angry school patrons, many of whom apparently first learned from a newspaper report of a plan to close several city schools and merge others.
After eight months on the job, Anderson introduced a series of district wide reforms that include closing seven failing schools and increasing accountability for charter schools. The measures also call for an expansion of the city's magnet school system.
She also met with reporters afterward and said the several hundred parents and others who attended the raucous meeting at Rutgers-Newark were not representative of all city residents.
“I understand the emotions over this, I really do,” she said. “These are community institutions. But there are scores of families who are very excited about this.”
Parents appear to be split on the proposal.
“A lot of kids don’t go nowhere in public schools so I think they either need to tighten it up or close them down and make better ones,” Julio Pandola told 1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg.
“Where are they going to go? All the schools now are really mainly filled up, where are they going to go? We need our school. Help it, fix it, but don’t close it, please,” Carol Dunnell said.
Anderson said several consistently underperforming schools with declining enrollment will be closed in their current form but some buildings will house new, merged schools.
During the public meeting, she gave a Power Point presentation outlining which schools were scheduled to be closed and consolidated with other schools, but left the stage before the allotted hour was finished. She was shouted down repeatedly and left to chants of “Cami must go!”
Wanda Sherrer, who sent three children through Newark’s schools and has several grandchildren enrolled, expressed dismay that the decisions on school closures appeared to have been made without public input.
“This was done already. It was a done deal when we got here (tonight),” she said. “We need these schools in our area. We can’t afford to let them close.”
Anderson said the plans have been in the process for two years and town hall discussions have been held.
Earlier Friday, teachers union President Joseph Del Grosso said teachers, parents and many school officials were not consulted in the decision process and they were furious.
“There were absolutely no community meetings or discussions with the union about this endeavor,” Del Grosso told The Associated Press. “It is catastrophic because what it actually does is take a city that’s in trouble and exacerbates the problem; as we close these schools, we close what were beacons in the community.”
Del Grosso said that test schools at Newark schools are improving and that reducing class sizes, not closing schools, was a better solution.
Newark’s public school system is the state’s largest, with 75 schools and a student population of about 40,000, according to its website. The schools have been plagued for years by low test scores, poor graduation rates and crumbling buildings. The district, which has been under state control since 1995, spends nearly $24,000 a year — more than twice the national average — per pupil.
Anderson was appointed last year to lead the district. Previously, she worked in New York City’s District 79, a network of more than 300 alternative schools, served as executive director of Teach For America, and was the head of programming for New Leaders for New Schools, a nonprofit foundation that recruits principals.
Anderson has close ties to Newark Mayor Cory Booker, and was an adviser to him in his first campaign for mayor in 2002. Booker has said revamping Newark’s education system is a main priority of his administration, although the city does not have direct control over the schools.
Booker appeared with Gov. Chris Christie and Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg on Oprah Winfrey’s syndicated talk show in 2010 to announce a $100 million pledge to the schools over five years.

NYC To Cancel Rent-Subsidy Program; Thousands Of Families Could Flood Shelter System
Written by pvictorwins
Saturday, 04 February 2012
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — New York City is cutting off rent-assistance payments to about 9,000 homeless families following a court decision, and advocates warned Friday the move could flood the city’s shelter system.
The city announced its decision to cancel the Advantage rent-subsidy program in March after it lost state and federal funding, but until this week it had been forced by a court order to continue the payments while legal challenges to the decision played out.
An appeal in the case is set to be heard next week, but on Thursday a judge ruled the city could proceed with its plans.
On Friday, advocates warned that many of the families would be forced to enter the city’s shelter system. Most of the families had entered the program with the understanding that their payments would end by the summer of 2012.
The city’s decision “will mean a surge of entries to our homeless shelters, which are already close to the breaking point,” objected Public Advocate Bill de Blasio in a statement.
Mary Brosnahan, executive director of the Coalition for the Homeless, said that continuing the program would have been cheaper than putting people in shelters.
Department of Homeless Services Commissioner Seth Diamond said in a statement that the Advantage program is too expensive for the city to support without help.
“The city taxpayers have borne alone the extraordinary cost of this program since the withdrawal of state and federal funding almost a year ago,” he said. “We will continue to work aggressively to prevent and end homelessness in the absence of state and federal assistance.”

Police Seek To Question Husband Of Woman Found Dead In Astoria
Written by Jesse
Saturday, 04 February 2012
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are looking for the husband of a woman found dead in her Astoria home.
Tara Hawes, a 33-year-old special needs teacher, was found unconscious and unresponsive when authorities responded to the scene. Police said they responded to a 911 call at 26-80 30th St., at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night.
The Medical Examiner has determined that Hawes did not have her throat slashed, as was earlier believed by police.
Instead the M.E. said Hawes sustained blunt force trauma to her head. Hawes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are now looking to question the victim’s husband, 32-year-old Jordan Hawes.
Jordan Hawes is described as 5-foot-9 and about 150 pounds. He could possible be driving a grey Jeep Liberty with New York license plate FEX7781.
Authorities also released a surveillance image of Hawes when he was using the victim’s ATM card on the morning of Jan. 31, police said.
Anyone with information in regards to this homicide or the location of Jordan Hawes is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.

“We gonna get you guys, okay, New York is done,” Melvin Valentine said on Friday.
“There’s ‘Go Pats’ everywhere, so it’s not very Giant friendly,” said Deana Camisa, of Scotch Plains, N.J.
Whether it’s on the streets downtown or inside the local pubs, it is tough being a Giants fan in Patriot nation. It also seems everyone wants Manning’s head on a stick.
When Tara Jauch, of Dartmouth, Mass., was asked what it was like being a Giants fan in the area, she said “it’s not good, it makes me very, very unpopular.”

Dennis also did some comparing and contrasting between Beantown and the Big Apple.
So which one is better?
“Boston in some ways, but New York in others. So it sort of makes me round out to be neutral,” Jauch said.
Though there is nothing neutral when comparing the Empire State Building, which stands 102 stories tall, to Boston’s Prudential Tower, which is half the height. New York wins.
“It’s big, so that pretty much the only difference to be honest, and New York people think they’re too cool for school I guess,” said Patriots fan Maurice Mersier.
New Yorkers do have their pizza — piping hot from just about any corner. But Boston has it’s rich and creamy, lumpy and hearty New England Clam Chowder.

Dennis went straight to the historic Union Oyster House, where the chef was admittedly biased.
“I know they make good pizza in New York, but clam chowder — you can’t beat it here in New England,” John Glufling said.
What about the beer?
Sam Adams is on tap just about everywhere in Boston. In New York, Foley’s Pub in Midtown has banned it just for Super Bowl weekend.
“We’ll have a lot of Patriots fans on Sunday; they just won’t be drinking Sam Adams,” said Foley’s owner Shaun Clancy.
So in the end, it might just come down to this weekend’s game — Tom Brady and the Brady Bunch or Big Blue and Manning.

While Super Bowl XLVI has been dissected very which way imaginable, life and death continues just like taxes.
As taxing as the Super Bowl coverage has been, when death pays a visit, it makes you stop and give pause ... and praise.
Two giants passed within days of each other. One is from the world of sports and the other from the world of entertainment.
Angelo Dundee, the great boxing trainer of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and countless other champions, passed this week at age 90.
Don Cornelius, the creator of the immensely popular and long-running dance and music showcase, "Soul Train," died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 75.
I had the pleasure of talking with Angie on a couple of occasions and he was even on my WFAN show. He was one of those legends in the sport, where you asked him a question, shut up, listened and learned.
Whether he was talking about his memories of all-time greats like Ali or Leonard, or a former heroin addict, Pinklon Thomas, who became a heavyweight champ or working the corner of George Foreman when he knocked out Michael Moorer for the heavyweight crown, his stories had depth, purpose, a touch of humor and history.
Angie had that rare combination of class, integrity and politeness that few people have today's society.
He had a great business card he used to pass out. It was a drawing of him with all his champions behind him. At the time the champs numbered 12.
I hope I still have it. Not to put it on eBay, but as a keepsake just for me.
There is no monetary value that I would want for it. It would be worthless if I tried to sell it.
The late, great trainer Eddie Futch had Freddie Roach as his charge and the five-time trainer-of-the-year, is one of the most respective and wanted trainers in the business.
With Dundee gone, I don't know who fills the void.
I don't think there is a candidate to even carry his weathered spit bucket.
Don Cornelius thrilled generations of music fans with his larger than life "Soul Train" show.
Every big name from Aretha Franklin to Elton John graced his show. I still remember a young, Chaka Kahn, then with the group Rufus, doing an interview with Cornelius. Let's just say that miss sexy, complete with bare midriff, fur-covered chaps and an Indian headdress, phoned in her answers from Pluto, if you know what I mean.
Dancers like Rosie Pérez and Fred "Rerun" Berry went on to make names for themselves as did Jodie Watley, who went from Soul Train dancer to become a member of the hit-making group Shalamar.
Not to be outdone by the singers and dancers, Cornelius wore some of the most outrageous outfits, this side of Walt Frazier, and like "Clyde," he pulled it off.
In some old-school dictionaries, Cornelius' picture is right next to the definition of "cool." Plus, his Afro was bigger than anyone from the Jackson 5.
I can't even count the number of weddings I've attended when the DJ would play Gamble and Huff's TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) which was the "Soul Train" theme and the "line" would form.
It's hard to forget watching 80-year-old grandmas grooving to the beat and dancing down the "Soul Train" line.
His tag line of wishing everyone "Love ... Peace ... and Soul!" should be around for a long time.
Dundee and Cornelius are both gone, but they will never be forgotten.
Next time I see a trainer bark out instruction to his fighter ("You're blowing it son!") or yet another grandpa sliding down the "Soul Train" dance line with a coolness all his own, I will smile and remember them both.
I have no choice. They are a part of me … the old school generation.
BETHPAGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Police in Nassau County are trying to determine if four burglaries that happened within blocks of each other in one day are connected.
Fingerprint dust was still visible Friday on the back door where Sal Filliponi believes a burglar got into his Bethpage house where his mother was sleeping.
“Went up to my bedroom first, got some jewelry out of the bedroom,” he told CBS 2′s Carolyn Gusoff.
His 62-year-old mother awoke startled to find the burglar feet from her bed. She was too upset to speak with CBS 2.
“She screamed at him and said ‘Get out of my house!’ Luckily, you know, he didn’t have a gun or anything, and he ran,” Filliponi said.
There were four home break-ins in Bethpage within about four hours Wednesday, all in a residential neighborhood where doors are decorated with Valentines and many are left unlocked.
“I usually leave the backdoor open and I go out and get firewood or something like that, and now each time I go in and out I lock the door,” said resident Frank Catalano.
The string of burglaries began at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a knock on the door of an 84-year-old man. The person at the door introduced himself as a new neighbor and the elderly man invited him in. When he left, the homeowner was out jewelry and money.
There have been 10 burglaries in Nassau this winter, but this latest spree shows no pattern. Two of the homes hit this week were unoccupied when burglars pried opened windows.
Police have only a vague description of a suspect, and neighbors are watching out for each other and themselves.
“Don’t let anybody in your house that doesn’t belong in your house,” resident Audrey Dalto said.
That’s the warning from police as well: know who you are letting into your house.
Police said the suspect who robbed the elderly man may have been driving a car with New Jersey plates.
NYPD Commissioner Kelly: No Struggle Between Teen, Officer Before Fatal Bronx Shooting
Written by skschust
Friday, 03 February 2012
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The police officer who used deadly force against an unarmed 18-year-old suspect in the Bronx on Thursday has been placed on restricted duty, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday.
WCBS 880′s Monica Miller On The Story
At a briefing, Kelly said the sergeant who supervised the officer has also been placed on restricted duty. The two officers had to turn in their guns and badges and will sit behind a desk for 30 days, reports CBS 2′s Pablo Guzman.
The shooting happened around 3 p.m. Thursday in the bathroom of the apartment house where 18-year-old Ramarley Graham lived with his mother and grandmother. On Friday, a small platoon of crime scene detectives got a search warrant for that house.
1010 WINS’ Al Jones With More From Commissioner Kelly
Police said narcotics officers spotted Graham on the street adjusting his waistband and thought he had a gun. When the officers approached, authorities said Graham took off running toward his home.
“The observation team reported, uh, over the tactical radio, they observed the butt of a gun in the waistband of Ramarley Graham,” Kelly said.
A cop followed him inside, where Graham was shot in the chest by the officer in a bathroom, according to police. Originally, police had said there was a struggle between the officer and the suspect, but Kelly said Friday that investigators now believe there was no struggle between the two before the shooting.
Paulette Minzi, the owner of the house, was taking a shower a floor above the shooting.
“The towel fell off me. I was naked, down here. And … put the gun in my face, like this, and start: (shouting) ‘Who live here? Who live here? Who are you? Live here? Who are you here?’ And I say, ‘I’m the landlord! I’m the landlord!’” Minzi told CBS 2′s Guzman.
“And they run upstairs and then a lot of cops start to come,” Minzi added. “And that’s when they shot the boy.”
Graham was taken to Montefiore Medical Center where he later died.
No gun was recovered, but police said marijuana was found inside the home.
“Typically in a situation like this, right away the police are taking off duty or off line duty and during an investigation, no matter what the facts the are, just to protect everybody,” he said. “And if they’ve done nothing wrong, they’ll be back on duty.”
WATCH: CBS 2′s Pablo Guzman reports
Police said they now think Graham ran because he was carrying marijuana and said they think he was trying to flush it down the toilet when cops found him the bathroom of his apartment.
“For them to chase him, to say they see him with a gun, they assume,” said Graham’s brother, Delmore Scott. “Imagine, that means everybody now is a target. Everybody is going to be a target now.”
The suspect’s mother, Constance Malcolm, said that Graham’s grandmother and 6-year-old brother were inside the house at the time of the shooting.
“In the bathroom they shot him. My 6-year-old son was there and saw everything,” Malcolm said. “I’m going to get justice.”
Authorities said Graham had at least two prior arrests for marijuana and burglary. Officials have not released the name of the officer involved as the NYPD's Internal Affairs Unit investigates.

Patsy?s Restaurant Cooks Up ?Blue Food? Menu To Support Giants In Super Bowl
Written by pvictorwins
Friday, 03 February 2012
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — One Italian restaurant in Midtown is doing its part to bring the New York Giants some good luck.
Sal Scognamillo, owner and chef of Patsy’s Italian Restaurant on West 56th Street, says he is cooking up a blue food menu as he roots on the Giants in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
“I said ‘What kind of foods can we do here that would symbolize a Giants win’ and so we have to do something with the blue food and this is what we came up with,” Scognamillo told 1010 WINS.
Scognamillo says the items will include blue potato pie with blue cheese along with mozzarella, ricotta and Parmesan cheeses in addition to bluefish with blue point oysters and blueberry ricotta cheesecake.
“You gotta have some kind of a blue ingredient, but that’s a tough color to make food with — the most natural thing would be the blueberries. So we took our regular ricotta cheesecake and we added some nice, fresh blueberries to it,” he said.
Scognamillo described the blue menu as an Italian feast to celebrate that the Giants are going to win it all.
“I’m hoping it’s just enough good luck to propel the Giants to a win,” he said.

Increased Israel-Iran Tension Leads To Heightened Security At Jewish Institutions In NYC
Written by jcap17
Friday, 03 February 2012
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The NYPD has confirmed that security has been increased at the Israeli consulate, synagogues and other Jewish cultural institutions throughout the city.
CBS 2 learned Friday afternoon that the rising tensions between Israel and Iran have prompted the security increase in our area.
CBS 2 cameras captured images of police cars outside the Israeli consulate on 2nd Avenue in Manhattan.
The NYPD said it is increasing security there, and at synagogues and other Jewish institutions after talks between Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Israeli officials about a possible Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iran.
There has been no specific threat made against institutions in our area, but police are warning officers to stay extra vigilant just in case.

Giants Fans Head To Indianapolis For Sunday?s Big Game
Written by skschust

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – With just two days to go until the big game, Giants fans all over the Tri-state area loaded up their cars and headed to Indianapolis.
WCBS 880′s Paul Murnane With Giants Fans’ Predictions From Manhattan
Patrick Dowling and five of his friends call themselves the “road warriors.” They’ve decked out a huge RV in Big Blue fashion and are driving to Indianapolis with game tickets in hand.
“I’m getting to go to the Super Bowl. This is a life long dream of mine,” said Giants fan Oleg Sabel.
“It should be a lot of fun,” said Giants fan Chris Dowling. “I think it’s a lot more fun than jumping on a plane and landing somewhere.
“Can’t beat it. We’ve been talking about this since we got the tickets. We’ve been on cloud nine,” said Patrick Dowling. ”Haven’t been able to work. It’s time to get on the road and have some fun.”
The road warriors say what’s even better than the road trip is when Big Blue comes back home victorious.
The Super Bowl Village is secured within an 8-block perimeter and while police were walking beats, everyone else was walking on clouds — like the Renoso family of Queens.
The family described being at the Super Bowl to CBS 2′s Jennifer McLogan as “amazing” and a “dream come true.”
Oscar Bernal, a firefighter from New Milford, New Jersey also made his way to Indianapolis for the big game.
“I slacked off work, I had a nice, clean, open road to drive down, made it easier,” he said. “I bleed blue, I’m so happy to be here, we are going to go all the way this year,” he said.
And they’re not the only ones in Indy.
Weeks ago, Mayor Michael Bloomberg had wondered if he could score tickets to the Super Bowl and it looks like he’s done just that. He’s going in style, flying by private jet to Indianapolis on Sunday and returning to New York after the game.
LISTEN: 1010 WINS’ John Montone reports
Fans already in Indy are taking in everything the city has to offer and local businesses are rolling out the welcome mats.
“We’re waiting for the New Yorkers to come to town and bring lots of money and lots of business,” an Indianapolis cab driver told 1010 WINS’ John Montone.

Residents and visitors alike are seeing “Super Bowl XLVI” most everywhere in Indy, from tons of Super Bowl merchandise to a giant Super Bowl sign in front of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in the city and even a countdown clock to the big game.
If you want to buy a piece of Super Bowl history, you better act fast. Anything related to the game is selling like hot cakes.
“It’s all a hot market. You’ve got to get it while it lasts and everybody wants it before the big game,” said one woman.
Meanwhile, the G-Men are also getting ready. The team hit the field Thursday and practiced again before holding a walk through on Saturday.
Westchester Students Collect Thousands Of Cans For ?Souper Bowl Of Caring? Drive
Written by mzielinska
Friday, 03 February 2012
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – The boys at Archbishop Stepinac High School in Westchester put the finishing touches on a blistering race to accumulate 50,000 cans of food in the space of four short weeks.
Father Tom Collins, president of the Catholic school, christened the challenge their “Souper Bowl of Caring.”
The students loaded up trucks Friday with thousands of cans of donated soup and other goods which they then delivered to community centers and food pantries in Port Chester and White Plains.
This year, the success of the New York Giants created a spark and extra excitement for the annual drive.
“We knew the food pantries in this area would be depleted after Christmas and Thanksgiving so I challenged the students to meet the needs of the hungry,” Collins said. “I was very happy to see they easily met their goal.”
In the interest of full disclosure, the concept of “can” is pretty loosely defined and the actual count is 42,836. However, the kids also raised $5,000 to buy additional food, which puts them way over the top.
“I did the math of $1 to buy three cans and that reaches the goal of 57,836,” Collins told 1010 WINS.
With a student body of 625, that’s about 80 cans per student, so the students met their goal, and Friday got their reward and cheered if the Superbowl just ended with another Giants’ win.
“I am granting a holiday the day after the Superbowl. Go Giants,” Collins said.
Every one of them helped, some more than others.
“I turned in five cans,” junior Simon Bolitto told CBS 2′s Lou Young.
“I spent about $30 and got about 90 cans,” senior John Drago said.
The techniques varied as well.
“Well they had a sale, so everything was off-price so everything was good,” said senior Anthony Mascetta.
“I actually stole from my parents cupboard a little bit. Don’t tell them, but I had to do what I had to do,” said senior Albert Stamaj.
And more than a few of these guys took money from their own pockets to make it happen.
“I spent $20, $30,” said freshman Albert Alfonsio.
Does having a day off really mean that much? “Yeah, I love it,” Alfonsio said.
The principal says he had latitude to grant the holiday because of unused snow days.

No injuries or accidents were reported in the 2:30 a.m. incident.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old John Brooks of Huntington, was arrested after State Police received multiple reports of a wrong-way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the parkway in Suffolk County.
He was given a desk appearance ticket to return to court on Feb. 13. The name of his attorney was not immediately available.
State Police say Brooks admitted taking prescription drugs earlier. They say he failed a sobriety test and was arrested.
“He pulled over without incident. He realized what he was doing eventually and we were able to arrest him. Pretty much, he admitted to taking some prescription medications and we sobriety tested him and arrested him,” New York State Trooper Frank Bandiero told 1010 WINS.
The specific prescription drug was not immediately available.

Sen. Lautenberg Makes Super Bowl Bet With Sen. Kerry

“He offered a Boston Cream Pie, but we offered something from Carlo’s Bakery, which is really a specialty,” said Lautenberg on Friday.
Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken is the home of the reality show “Cake Boss.”
“I am very confident about this bet. I’m excited about this bet,” said Lisa Valastro, one of the family owner and the Cake Boss’s sister. “Who made the bet? We’re going to win this!”
But customer Jim from Syracuse wonders about a cake from the Cake Boss put up against a Boston Cream Pie.
“I don’t know that that’s a fair if that’s a fair wager for only a Boston Cream Pie,” he said.
If the Giants win, will Lautenberg eat some pie?
“Sure,” said Lautenberg.
He says he’ll give his staff the rest.
“We work hard, but we eat fast,” added Lautenberg.
Bronx Prosecutor?s Outlaw Lifestyle Finally Catches Up With Her

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - One New York City prosecutor’s law violating lifestyle just got to be too much for her to keep her job.
WCBS 880′s Irene Cornell On The Story
Since the Bronx district attorney, Rob Johnson, launched his war on ticket fixing in the NYPD, prosecuting dozens of police officers, assistant D.A. Jennifer Troiano had become something of an embarrassment to that office.
As a Bronx prosecutor, she had managed to squirm out of two drunk driving arrests in 2004 and 2006 and those tickets disappeared as if by magic, and she kept working as a prosecutor.
Then in 2010, with the ticket fixing investigation heating up, she was busted for reckless and drunk driving in connection with a three-care pile-up on the Major Deegan Expressway.
Now, that assistant D.A. has gotten the axe in the Bronx and a special prosecutor from Manhattan is handling the case against her.

The two-week layoff is just about over and it’s finally almost time for Super Bowl XLVI.
Everyone is getting their final predictions out for the game as the clock winds down on the time until the game, and for the most part, the New York media is backing the Giants and the Boston media is backing the Patriots. A lot has changed since these two teams met four years ago in Super Bowl XLII.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NFL is increasing the number of Thursday night games so more of its teams can play in prime time.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said that there will be Thursday night games on the NFL Network from the second to the 15th week of the season, giving all of the league’s teams a chance to appear in prime time on some outlet.
Those games will be in addition to the usual Sunday night and Monday night games, which tend to feature teams coming off good seasons.
Goodell revealed the television scheduling change at his state of the NFL news conference Friday.
He sidestepped a question about expanding the regular season schedule, saying it’s something that would have to be evaluated along with the players.

UConn?s Jim Calhoun Taking Indefinite Medical Leave
Written by Colin Kelly
Friday, 03 February 2012
STORRS, Conn. (AP) - University of Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun is taking an indefinite medical leave of absence, the school announced on Friday.
The Hall of Fame coach, who turns 70 in May, has been suffering for several months from spinal stenosis, a lower back condition that causes him severe pain and hampers mobility, according to the release.
“Last summer, Jim had some significant back pain and has seen two excellent back specialists,” said Dr. Peter Schulman, Calhoun’s primary care doctor. “The initial approach recommended to him was stretching, physical therapy and exercise, and that was successful for several months. It turns out that there is some degenerative problem in the lumbar vertebrae and it’s impinging on the nerves.”
George Blaney, the team’s associate head coach, will lead the team in Calhoun’s absence. The Huskies (14-7, 4-5 Big East) have lost four games in a row. They host Seton Hall on Saturday before travelling to Louisville Monday.
The school confirmed that Calhoun will miss at least those two games.
“Jim has been able to manage it with the physical therapy and stretching, but over the last several days, things have become worse and he is not able to deal with this on a day to day basis, so other options need to be considered,” Schulman said. “Right now, he is physically unable to coach.”
Calhoun has had a history of health problems. He is a three-time cancer survivor, overcoming prostate cancer in 2003 and skin cancer twice, most recently in 2008.
Calhoun is No. 6 on the all-time wins list with 867. He has won three national championships at Connecticut and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. He coached the team to its fourth Final Four and third national title last April.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – They're the unsung heroes often hiding on the sideline and in the shadow of superstars.
1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg sat down earlier this week with the Giants’ golden-footed kicker Lawrence Tynes before the big game.
His two game-winning field goals sent Big Blue to its two Super Bowls against New England.
1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg with Lawrence Tynes
"When I cross that white line on our sideline I go into my own little quiet world," Tynes said. "People always ask, 'How do you do it?' Well, I think just training. When I get into the game I'm really in a relaxed state of mind."
The Patriots have won the big game twice on the leg of a kicker and Tynes knows it could come down to him.
"You always have to be prepared," Tynes said. "Two high-flying offensives, two teams that are playing really good defense...you have to be ready."
Tynes shies away from the spotlight but if called upon in the big game he says he's ready to shine.
"I just like to do my job and help out these guys," Tynes said.
